I LOVE TRAVELING BECAUSE…
It opens my mind and puts the world in perspective.
What made you decide on this destination?
We like culture-shocks and we haven’t been to a Muslim country before. Once you’ve been somewhere in Europe, you have pretty much seen it all in a way. The same goes for South America and so on.
How did this trip come together?
We spent about a month researching before booking everything from the Riads and restaurants to our desert trip outside Marrakesh. In the past, we’ve traveled off the cuff but it gets a bit stressful. We left a few meals up in the air which gave us an excuse to go explore but I recommend first time Marrakesh visitors to follow an itinerary. Looking lost in Medina (the old town) will draw a lot of attention.
Best form of transportation?
Highlights and favorite things?
The Riad Dar Darma in Marrakesh, as well as Scarabeo Camp in the Agafay desert, were both amazing. Dar Darma which we found on Mr & Mrs Smith was decorated like a Moroccan palace. It was so ornate and grand, every detail was considered. We felt like royalty the entire time we were there, maybe because a prestigious family also lived there once.
Scarabeo was one of the most unforgettable places we’ve ever been. The scenery, the food, the service, the camels, the dune buggies and the star gazing were incredible. Just being in a tent in the middle of the desert was an experience on its own. And on top of everything the camp was decorated with a sort of Ernest Hemingway vibe and the tents and beds were so cozy. Glamping at its best.
Under the radar must-see or do?
Scarabeo Camp in Morocco.
Did you encounter any challenges leading up to or during the trip?
Our travel agent forgot to tell us that we needed a visa to enter to South Africa, so we couldn’t board our plane for our safari, We ended up doing an impromptu road trip from Zurich to the Amalfi Coast instead.
3 words that sum up your experience.
Austere, rustic, luxurious.
Looking back, what do you miss the most?
Feeling completely lost.
