The Hunter's Chalet
Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort

CERVO Mountain Boutique Resort is the ultimate labor of love. Created by Daniel and Seraina Lauber and part of Design Hotels, the boutique resort embodies the  cozy feel of alpine chalets while creating a  unique luxury experience. Tucked at the base of Switzerland’s beautiful and entrancing Matterhorn mountain, the hotel is comprised of four chalets, initially inspired by the original old Chalet San Francisco.

We spoke to Daniel and Seraina Lauber about their inspiration and life in the Alps.

Why did you choose Matterhorn and Zermatt?

I was born and raised in Zermatt, and I have always believed in this beautiful alpine village.

How did you find the old original chalet?

The original chalet was built in the 50s. My parents found and bought the chalet in the 80s. It became the origin and inspiration of CERVO. Today, it is the main reception, lounge, and restaurant.

What was the design inspiration of the new chalets?

We were inspired by hunting lodges and alpine chalets, but wanted to give them a modern interpretation. Each chalet has a suite, four superior rooms, a master bedroom as well as a wellness area and outdoor area with a view of The Matterhorn. We wanted to create a cozy atmosphere with informal luxury.

Where did the name CERVO come from?

My father was a hunter and I am a hunter. We wanted to bring the spirit of hunting to the area. The word Cervo means deer in Italian, so it encompasses the hunting lodge inspiration. It also represents the Matterhorn, which in Italian is called Monte Cervino which means Deer Mountain.

What is the inspiration behind the food at your restaurant, The Ferdinand, and what is the menu like?

Seraina was a chef before CERVO, and her direction for the restaurant has been amazing. Our restaurant, The Ferdinand, serves contemporary alpine cuisine with a northern Italian influence. Our cuisine reflects our hotel’s philosophy, we accommodate groups and serve family style. We like to have daily specials along with our menu. Tasty fresh meals from tasty products is our main goal.

What is the most important thing about the customer service at CERVO?

We have a very passionate and friendly team who makes CERVO a home and much more than a hotel. We love to welcome guests from all over the world and create an atmosphere of togetherness.

What is the most unique aspect of CERVO?

There are many things about CERVO that make it unique, but one of my favorites would be having the chalets set at the end of the slope making us able to ski in and out of our hotel. The closeness to The Matterhorn is quite spectacular.
